Gun accidents down, but other home accidents on the rise

If we care about our kids, we’ll ban medicine and stairs.

Contrary to what you might expect from all the news about gun violence, accidental deaths from guns in the home are relatively uncommon, and have actually gone down slightly in recent years, according to a new study. But other deadly accidents at home, including poisonings, falls, and burns, are far more common, and on the rise. The good news: some simple measures can help prevent most of them.

The study, published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, looked at data from 2000 to 2008. More than 30,000 people die from accidents in the home each year, the study found. The three leading causes of accidental deaths were poisonings (43 percent), falls (34 percent), and fire or burn injuries (9 percent). Firearm mishaps accounted for just 1 percent of all accidental deaths in the home.

Christopher Dorner manhunt: Two innocent women shot by LAPD officers had “no warning” – CBS News

I am a law-and-order kind of guy, but this is crap. These guys need to go to jail for this.

In a news conference, Police Chief Charlie Beck said the officers thought the women’s royal blue Toyota Tacoma matched the description of Dorner’s dark-colored Nissan pickup truck.

“Tragically, we believe this was a case of mistaken identity by the officers,” said Beck.

Jonas finds that hard to believe.

“The vehicle is a different color. The license plate doesn’t match. There’s nothing there for you to start shooting people. And even if they had the person in question… Mr. Dorner…you still have to give them an opportunity to get out. You can’t just start administering street justice,” said Jonas.

Carranza suffered minor injuries to her hand from shattering glass.

Hernandez, who was shot in the back, is in ICU at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

LaRue Tactical Limits Law Enforcement Weapons to Civilian Spec

Updated Policy for State and Local Agency Law Enforcement Sales:

Due to the recent and numerous new Anti-gun/Anti-2nd Amendment laws passed and/or pending across our country, LaRue Tactical has been forced to reconsider how we provide products to state and local agencies.

Effective today, in an effort to see that no legal mistakes are made by LaRue Tactical and/or its employees, we will apply all current State and Local Laws (as applied to civilians) to state and local law enforcement / government agencies. In other words, LaRue Tactical will limit all sales to what law-abiding citizens residing in their districts can purchase or possess.

State and local laws have always been a serious focus of this firm, and we are now dovetailing that focus with the constitutional rights of the residents covered in their different areas by the old and new regulations.

We realize this effort will have an impact on this firm’s sales – and have decided the lost sales are less danger to this firm than potential lawsuits from erroneous shipments generated by something as simple as human error.

Guard shoots at boy, 15, at FDA office in Bothell – seattlepi.com

A security guard opened fire on a 15-year-old boy at a Food and Drug Administration facility in Bothell early Friday, according to police.

Bothell Police Captain Denise Langford said it was not immediately clear why the guard fired at the boy about 7 a.m. in the parking lot of the FDA’s Pacific Regional Laboratory Northwest.

The teenager got into a car after the shooting and crashed into another vehicle about a mile away, Langford said.

Contrary to initial information from police at the scene, it was not clear if the boy was actually wounded in the shooting. Lanford said the boy suffered injuries and was taken to a hospital where he was expected to recover.

People who were in the area at the time of the shooting said they heard multiple gunshots, and tire tracks could been seen leading from the street in front of the building and across a grassy median.

Women delivering newspapers in Torrance shot in manhunt for ex-cop – latimes.com

We need gun control for cops, first. These are the people the left trusts to have guns.

Two women who were shot by Los Angeles police in Torrance early Thursday during a massive manhunt for an ex-LAPD officer were delivering newspapers, sources said.

The women, shot in the 19500 block of Redbeam Avenue, were taken to area hospitals, Torrance police Lt. Devin Chase said. They were not identified. One was shot in the hand and the other in the back, according to Jesse Escochea, who captured video of the victims being treated.

It was not immediately known what newspapers the women were delivering. After the shooting, the blue pickup was riddled with bullet holes and what appeared to be newspapers lay in the street alongside.

Southern Poverty Law Center website triggered FRC shooting | WashingtonExaminer.com

So can we charge the SPLC as an accomplice?

The Family Research Council shooter, who pleaded guilty today to a terrorism charge, picked his target off a “hate map” on the website of the ultra-liberal Southern Poverty Law Center which is upset with the conservative group’s opposition to gay rights.

Floyd Lee Corkins II pleaded guilty to three charges including a charge of committing an act of terrorism related to the August 15, 2012 injuring of FRC’s guard. He told the FBI that he wanted to kill anti-gay targets and went to the law center’s website for ideas.

At a court hearing where his comments to the FBI were revealed, he said that he intended to “kill as many as possible and smear the Chick-Fil-A sandwiches in victims’ faces, and kill the guard.” The shooting occurred after an executive with Chick-Fil-A announced his opposition to same-sex marriage.

Bruce Willis: Don’t infringe on Second Amendment – WTOP.com

Bruce Willis says he’s against new gun control laws that could infringe on Second Amendment rights. The “Die Hard” star also dismisses any link between Hollywood shootouts and real-life gun violence.

“I think that you can’t start to pick apart anything out of the Bill of Rights without thinking that it’s all going to become undone,” Willis told The Associated Press in a recent interview while promoting his latest film, “A Good Day To Die Hard.” ”If you take one out or change one law, then why wouldn’t they take all your rights away from you?”

Willis’ fifth outing as wise-cracking cop John McClane, due in theaters Feb. 14, comes as his action franchise marks its 25th anniversary. The 57-year-old actor will also be seen firing away at bad guys in the upcoming sequels “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” and “Red 2,” both due later this year.

But he believes “the real topic is diminished” when observers link Hollywood entertainment with high-profile mass shootings like those last year in Connecticut and Colorado.

“No one commits a crime because they saw a film. There’s nothing to support that,” Willis said. “We’re not making movies about people that have gone berserk, or gone nuts. Those kind of movies wouldn’t last very long at all.”

Willis added that he doesn’t see how additional legislation could prevent future mass shootings.

Colorado boy, 7, reportedly faces suspension for tossing imaginary grenade | Fox News

A Colorado second-grader may be suspended from his elementary school after he disobeyed a key rule of no weapons, real or imaginary, when he tossed an imaginary grenade Friday during recess and went, ‘pshhh,’ to indicate that the imaginary device detonated, KDVR.com reported.

Alex Watkins,7, who attends Mary Blair Elementary in Loveland, said he was playing the game “Rescue the World.” He plays the role of a heroic soldier out to rid the world of an evil threat.

His duties led him to throw the imaginary grenade into a box he pretended contained evil forces. He said he didn’t make any threats and was playing by himself, KDVR.com reported.

Ted Nugent to Piers Morgan: ‘You’re the Perfect Poster Boy to Stand Up for Things That Make No Sense’ | NewsBusters

MORGAN: 100,000 Americans get hit by gunfire a year.

NUGENT: Those include bad guys getting shot by cops, Piers.

MORGAN: 18,000 of those kill themselves with guns.

NUGENT: Japan has a higher suicide rate and they’re not allowed to get down wind of a gun. Your turn.

MORGAN: How many people got murdered by guns in Japan in the last two or three years each year?

NUGENT: We’re not talking about guns, we’re talking about the act of murder. Do you care about murders or do you only care about murders with guns?

MORGAN: I care about all deaths.

NUGENT: I don’t think you do. I think you care about guns. I think you’re obsessed with guns. 99.99 percent of the gun owners of America are wonderful people that you are hanging around with here today, perfectly safe, perfectly harmless, wonderful, loving, generous, giving, caring people. Would you leave us the hell alone? Go after the nut jobs, go after the murderers, because I don’t know any. We need to lock up the bad guys, and when people show dangerous, murderous intent, which everyone one of these mass murderers showed, all their neighbors, their family, their teachers, their fellow students, they all knew they were crazy. But Piers, we didn’t stop them because we’re worried about hurting their feelings. We have a madman problem in America where they’re running around. We have a felony recidivism problem in America. Let’s focus on that together and leave the rest of us alone.

MORGAN: A, I won’t leave you alone because this is a debate that has to be had in America.

NUGENT: And we appreciate that because you’re the perfect poster boy to stand up for the things that make no sense at all to common sense people.

This gun rights backer, armed with his Glock and his blog, is always on alert – The Washington Post

Sitting in his living room with Farago looking on, Kenik shows off a couple of his black rifles. Farago generally defers to Kenik’s expertise on technical firearms issues. They’re something of an odd couple: Farago is tall, mild-mannered, bespectacled, and with his gun on his hip could pass for a plainclothes detective. Kenik is short, round and intense, prone to emphatic declarations.

Both are Jewish, and both lost grandparents in the Holocaust — surely a source, Farago says, of their wariness of government. Farago says he feels betrayed and abandoned by fellow Jews who favor gun control.

“Because of all the people on the face of the Earth who should be pro-gun, the Jews should be right at the top of that list,” he says. “How many Jews have to die before they realize that ‘never again’ means being prepared — personally prepared?”
